Matt Tom, San Francisco, USA

Matt is an independent technical consultant focusing on engineering design and implementation (Integration, Testing, & Validation; Scale-up & Manufacturing) in the Food and Beverage industry. With over 15 years of experience from post-harvest to marketplace and life cycle testing, he specializes in New Product Development and Commercialization, especially in the food technology space where he integrates the sciences with digital technologies.

Matt brings tasty and innovative alternative potein-based foods to the market that are healthier and more sustainable than their non-plant-based counterparts, first through government research at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service collaborating with companies like PepsiCo, General Mills, Clorox, and P&G, and more recently at Silicon Valley food tech startups such as Impossible Foods, Kite Hill, JUST, Ripple Foods, and more. Well versed in Usability, Six Sigma (both Process Improvement and Design), Lean, GMP, GLP, HACCP, and PCHF, he serves as a Subject Matter Expert in food technology and food processing in technical due diligence efforts, a Product Development Advisor to many early-stage startups, and a Mentor in start-up incubators/accelerators. He is also a continuing guest lecturer at the Culinary Institute of America (Hyde Park, NY campus) on the topic of Food Product Design for Manufacturing on the Culinary Science R&D track.

Matt received his B.S. in Biological Systems Engineering from UC Davis and his M.S. in Industrial & Systems Engineering from San Jose State University. He is an active member in the local chapters of the American Society for Quality, Board Certified Professional Ergonomists, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, and Institute of Food Technologists.

Isaac Emery, PhD., Seattle, USA

Strategic Life Cycle analysis to optimize  your production systems and to ensure delivery on your sustainability messages

Isaac is an environmental sustainability scientist and consultant with over a decade of experience in quantitative sustainability, systems thinking, and life cycle assessment. His recent work focuses on food and agriculture-based solutions to our most critical environmental problems. Dr. Emery is the founder and principal consultant of Informed Sustainability Consulting, where he partners with alternative protein companies and non-profit organizations to evaluate and communicate the role of novel foods and healthy diets in a sustainable society.

Isaac is also the lead sustainability analyst for the HSUS Forward Food program and a co-chair of the Food and Climate Alliance – an international network working to highlight plant-centric diets as a critical climate change solution. His past work includes public-facing reports on food sustainability issues as well as research projects on agriculture and energy with major universities, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense. He has written over a dozen scientific papers and presented to a wide range of audiences on life cycle assessment and sustainable agricultural systems.

Andrew Powell, PhD., Singapore

Communication on innovation to all stakeholders not just the echo chamber

Andrew Powell graduated from the University of Edinburgh with honours in Biology and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, Canada. He has held research and academic positions at the University of Guelph, Canada, the National Institute for Health Sciences in Tokyo, and Tsukuba, Japan and the National University of Singapore.

From 1994 to 2005 he has worked as a consultant assisting a wide range of clients (e.g. Quintiles, Syngenta, Agrium, CIDA, Enterprise Ireland, GTZ, CropLife Asia, Canadian Government) in their activities in biotechnology across East Asia. He founded Asia BioBusiness with Professor Paul Teng in 2005 and continued his consulting activities.

He has considerable experience in stakeholder dialogues, facilitations and public fora across the region and in Australia, and is invited regularly to chair conference sessions at global technology conferences.

Over the last 18 years he has been active in area of Risk Communication, conducting training and offering advice to both public and private sector clients particularly around innovations

Andrew was a member of the Alberta Government’s Research and Innovation Advisory Committee (ARIAC) from 2017 to 2019. He is also on the Advisory Committee of The Scientific American / BioIndustry Organization Worldview Publication. From 2012 to 2017 he sat on the advisory board for Syngenta’s Rice Bowl Index.
